Robert Fortune, a Scotsman in the employ of The East India Company, set out on an adventure through China to explore the hidden secrets of tea. He secured more than 20,000 samples of tea varietals and had them sent to Darjeeling, establishing India’s most popular tea region. Today, The East India Company’s Tea Master works closely with plantations in Darjeeling to bring to market one of the most coveted teas of the season – the Darjeeling First Flush, otherwise known as the Champagne of teas.
In Episode 7, Charles Pope entertains Lady Brockenhurst, Anne Trenchard and Lady Maria Grey to tea in his office in Bishopsgate. Perhaps a cup of Darjeeling was enjoyed. During their visit he charms Maria with talk of India and The East India Company, and she hangs on his every word . . .
